Beng Mealea is in the east of Angkor and it has been left in its natural state. It is overgrown with fig trees. The tree’s roots are entwined around the temple’s structure. Suriyavarman II founded this temple in the 12th century to be a model of Angkor Wat. It is located near the quarry, where they took the sandstones to build the temples in Angkor. A new study indicates that the temple was dedicated to Buddhism, because they found the Buddhisatwa in the complex. On the pediment and lintel, the story shows Indian episodes such as Ramayana and Churning of the sea of milk and Mahaparata. It can be heaven professional photographers.
Phnom Kulen is an ecotourism site in the east of Angkor. It is a sacred mountain for Cambodians. In the mountain, there are some beautiful things such as a forest, waterfall, the thousand Linga river, a massive Buddha and the ancient city of Cambodia. A motorbike trip in the mountain is recommended because there are many things to explore in Kulen. Kulen was the capital city of Cambodia for a while and then they moved it down to the shore of the Tonle Sap, because it was easy to find food for the local population. The city was found the Linda Scanner and it was supported by Sidney university in 2011 who sent an archeological team to excavate the area.
Tonle sap is a biggest fresh water lake in South East Asia. It is the most important national treasure on the ground in Cambodia. The Tonle sap produces about 300 million tons of fish per year for Cambodians. In the lake, you can see 800,000 people living in the floating villages. Most people who live in the five provinces by the lake, eat more than 70kg of fish per year. In the rainy season, the water flows from the Mekong into this lake and the water brings a lot of fish with it. In the dry season the water flows back down to the Mekong river and the water brings white fish. There are only black fish in the lake with muddy water. People go fishing for two times a day and at night at 2am. From August to October, the people can’t fish to sell the fish because it is time for the fish to breed.
In the north east of Angkor about 120 Km, you can visit the ancient city of Koh Ker. Jayavarman IV constructed this in order to dedicate it to God Shiva. Jayavarman IV, moved the capital city to Koh Ker in 928AD to find a victorious city for himself. They built more than 200 temples in the area, according to the written inscriptions. If you go to Beng Mealea, you should continue to explore this area. In Kor Ker, there is a temple, Prasat Thom. It is the most beautiful temple in the area. It stands on 7 different levels. During the civil war, they used this temple as the military base. They put the artillery on the top of this temple. Behind the Prasat Thom, you can see a handmade Pyramid mount.
On this tour you can explore the rural area in the Siem Reap province. In the area, you can experience and learn about the daily life of Cambodian people in the present day. It has changed a lot since the French colonization from 1863 to 1953. People still live in houses on stilts. They do farming and fishing to make a living. They live in simple life with very few modern stresses. They always have smiling faces. And they don’t worry about world’s economic crisis. In this place, you can explore the villages and then, you will pause to make some pictures of the farms, houses, markets, monasteries, and people. This is good for people who feel a little ‘templed out’.
Here you can go to visit the rural areas by quad bike and you can see so many thing like in the cycling tours. It is a bit easier than the cycling tours and you can also go to see the waterfall, the thousand linga river, big Buddha in the mountain and some temples in the area. This tour can be more than one hour. The ATV tour is now popular in Angkor for some people who want to experience something else around Siem Reap province. Some people use this visit the countryside, then the floating villages and on the way back to the hotel, they can see more rural area.
This tour is an adventure to explore some rural areas in the north east of Siem Reap. I have my partner who can bring the tourists by the motorbikes, then you can stay overnight at a homestay in the village to experience and learn about the life in the rural area. The next morning, the people can walk through the trees to explore the sacred Kulen Mountain near the Quarry, where they took the sandstones to build the temples. It is a very good experience, but you must bring mosquito spray, and some sun cream with you. When you stay overnight in the forest, you can learn about the life of Cambodian farmers in the remote area. They live in the trees during the rainy season and grow rice for the family.
